This 19th century silver supari box from China was used for storing betel nut supari, also known as paan. The box is hand worked with flowing floral designs and a double happiness symbol on the lid. Paan is a preparation, which combines a paste of spices in a betel leaf, which is chewed for its stimulant and psychoactive effects. Rectangular in shape with lobed ends and beautifully carved with floral patterns, this piece would look great in a wide range of interiors.
Paan boxes are found across Asia and due to the wide variety of styles and designs, they have become very popular with collectors. They're perfect for storing jewelry or as a desk tidy.
